Biography
Originally from Estella-Lizarra (Navarre, Spain), he completed his professional music studies at the Pablo Sarasate Conservatory in Pamplona and then entered MUSIKENE – Higher School of Music of the Basque Country. There, as a student of José Luis Estellés and Antony Pay, he consolidated and expanded his musical knowledge, graduating with honours.
Subsequently he studied a master’s degree at the Hochschule der Künste Bern with Ernesto Molinari, where he is deepening his knowledge on bass clarinet and contrabass clarinet. He also delved into the study of Historically Informed Performance and Contemporary Music, and took his first steps into the world of free improvisation and performance on period instruments.
Since October 2023 he is appointed academist with Galicia Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and studies a postgraduate degree in Orchestral Specialization at the University of Santiago de Compostela.
He develops his freelance activity in Switzerland, Spain and the rest of Europe, participating in and developing orchestral, chamber music and contemporary creation projects (multi- and transdisciplinary).
His orchestral activity has led him to share the stage with personalities such as Tabea Zimmermann, Jean-Guihen Queyras, Juanjo Mena, Lucas Macías, Andrés Salado, Victor Pablo Pérez and Joseph Swensen, and among others; and also to be a member of ensembles such as JONDE, Neue Philarmonie München, EGO, OJEX, JOSCAN and JOL.
He was also a member of the Youth Academy of the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada (2018-2022), participating in the International Festival of Music and Dance of Granada, and has collaborated with professional ensembles such as Bern Symphony Orchestra, La Pamplonesa or Banda Municipal de Bilbao.
Likewise, his chamber music activity allowed him to play with musicians of stature, such as Mario Caroli, Juliette Hurel, José Luis Estellés, Jean-Louis Hurel, Hillel Zori and Erika Geldsetzer, and to participate in festivals like AIMS festival 2023 (guest artist) and chamber music cycles such as Juan March Foundation or Pasaia-Trintxerpe.
As a soloist, he appeared with Musikene Sinfonietta in 2019 performing Dance Preludes by Witold Lutosłaski, and with the HKB Symphony Orchestra in 2023 (Yehudi Menuhin Forum, Bern) performing Sinfonía Concertante Op. 41 by Franz Danzi.
His interest in searching for new concert formats and new ways of connecting with today’s audiences has led him to take part in projects collaborating with other artistic disciplines such as poetry, Ciclo Poetika Zikloa, and dance, Kukai Dantza; as well as creating his own transdisciplinary projects such as Metrika Duo and working with composers such as Pascal Dusapin, Tomás Marco and Mauricio Sotelo, among others.
He also participates in international contemporary music cycles and festivals such as Acht Brücken 2023 (Cologne, Germany), Warsaw Autumn 66 (Warsaw, Poland), Bern Playtime 2022 (Bern, Switzerland), Ensemble Recherche Akademie Woche 2020 (Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany) and the Hotsetan cycle of experimental music 2020-2021 at the Azkuna Zentroa Centre (Bilbao, Spain).
A philosophy lover and defender of art as a reflection of individual and social thoughts. Are noteworthy his articles on Gérard Grisey and french spectralism “Anubis – Nout: Perception and Temporal Thickness in the Spectralism of Gérard Grisey”, and on Ramon Lazkano and his concertante work for clarinet, Ortzi Isilak “Ramon Lazkano: An Aesthetic-Interpretative Approach through Ortzi Isilak”, pending publication and exhibited at the 2022 conference “Desde el aula al espacio público” of Artium, Museum-Center for Basque Contemporary Art.
